"Still Driving Around Sunny San Diego!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:22:12

Our friend Jimmy in San Francisco is SO funny (which is one reason why we LOVE him so much). He will send us the funniest pictures of places he’s been and things he’s seen. Sometimes he’ll do it just to make us jealous. Like the picture below which he sent in an email tonight with the caption. “Guess where I am?” It’s the server at our favorite gelato spot in San Francisco. It made me and Eric laugh SO hard. He knows we would be there every night if we lived in S. F. He also sent this picture asking. “How many more do you need?” That’s because I insisted on saving the cute plastic cups that the gelato was served in. I thought you gave the cups back so they could be washed and re-used but they just throw them away. Well not only am I against that (because I’m into recycling) but they’re so cute and they are the perfect serving of ice cream sorbet gelato or pudding so I washed them and have them in the RV. Jimmy is slowly building a complete service for me (and I didn't even have to register!) because they come in different sizes and different colors. So if you come to visit you can expect to have dessert in a cute little cup like this! We started the day with a big brunch at. We had wanted to try this place since our last visit when we first spotted it. I just loved the name! It’s a typical diner which was VERY hard to find in many places across the country. We’re happy to see they have a great one in San Diego! This restaurant opened in 1979 and was voted “Best Breakfast.” I had the tortilla soup and grilled cheese (on rye with tomato) and Eric had the BLT. Both were really good. The waitress asked us about New York. It seems everywhere we go as soon as we open our mouths we give ourselves away. It’s a good thing we’re not on the lam! So here’s our day in a nutshell:1. I plug the address of a prospective apartment/condo/house into Betty;2. Eric drives us there in our zippy little Kia Rio;3. We look at the outside of the building/complex/house;4. I plug the next address into Betty. We did get to see two apartments on the inside today since I called to inquire about an apartment and he said he was going over there to show it to someone else and we could come too. There were two apartments available in one 8-unit building. Both were up a long flight of stairs. The building was in an okay neighborhood on an okay block but the apartments weren’t that great. They’re fine for young people because they were clean and nice but too small for us and we really want something a little “fancier.” If we were 25 and broke it would be perfect because the price was right but I’m happy we can afford something a little better. We were a little disappointed because the place we liked best from yesterday’s search was already gone this afternoon. You have to act fast if you like a place because the good ones get snatched up really fast. After five hours out and about we came back and Eric immediately took a nap while I went on and searched for at least another hour for more apartments we might like. Since I don’t have a printer in the RV (boo hoo). I have to hand-write all the details of the apartments in my little notebook. It’s a lot of work reading every ad and writing down the ones that we might like but it’s worth it -- if we can find a great place to live! We are ready to take a break (especially Eric) but I really feel like I have to keep searching so I may go out on my own tomorrow. I think I can drive the car program Betty and look at all the places by myself. If I like the buildings. I can make an appointment to see the apartment and then he’ll go with me. This part is really pretty boring since you’re just looking at the outside of the building. We learned the neighborhoods we like and don’t like so I’m going to narrow my search dramatically and will only go to the neighborhoods we like best. Wish me luck!

"Reminiscing About Our Days in San Diego (LONG)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 19:31:25

We lived in Rancho Bernardo for about a year. I felt the be to communicate on it after seeing the list (top cerebrate in sidebar) of homes lost in the area linked from. It's very heart-rending to see a enumerate of lives in upheaval - whether they're in New Orleans or San Diego regardless of their race or wealth or whatever. I evaluate having lived there just makes me more fully aware of the reality the fragility of it all. We lived in some lovely apartments on Carmel Mountain - I think within about a mile of where the fires have hit. When John finished engineering educate around Christmas of 1994. Ria was a year and half and we were just expecting Gus. It was a terrible year for entry aim engineers my parents had just moved into a fairly roomy house in Poway (from Silicon Valley - huge improvement in housing costs!) and so we decided to try the California job market. We lived with my parents for several months - basically during John's job hunt - and moved into one of the Carmel Mountain apartments a month or so before Gus was born. It was a huge complex and we were a little naive moving into it. We moved into a one bedroom apartment (already a financial squeeze) before Gus was born and then discovered that we were required by law to move into a two bedroom apartment once he was born. We bought our first real mattress on ascribe ($500 - ouch!). We were paying our own medical insurance and John had no days to take off when Gus was born (double ouch!). But I wouldn't trade a moment of it. We only had one car but Ria and Gus and I walked around the apartment complex like crazy (would that I was in that kind of cause again!) and knew all the office staff and most especially the mail lady. There was no playset in the complex (unfortunately!) but some of us moms would meet in the tennis courts to let the kids run around. Our two bedroom apartment had noisy upstairs neighbors and the car alarms went off constantly but the corner bedroom had the most beautiful light and we put a little smooth in the "tend" on the porch for Ria to play in. We were great dumpster divers in those days. We found a beautiful drop-leaf table next to the dumpster (which I later gave to my mom because Gus kept hitting his head on it and he had a way of reacting that scared me to death). We open a remove dryer that had literally eaten the previous owners socks (seriously - there was a pile inside the dryer - it might have been a joke. LOL). A few months after we moved in we managed to squeeze out the be of a pass to the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park and milked it for all it was worth (it literally expired three days before we moved back to Wisconsin) and practically lived there. I remember meeting with some sort of financial planner in those days (after answering his ad for a free table and chairs). I think he thought we were nuts. We were way in the negative as far as things desire "net worth" go but we were working hard and had confidence that we'd be in a better displace some day somehow (change surface if it involved moving back to Wisconsin!). It didn't take desire to cognise that the complex was out of our league financially. Most of the residents had two incomes AND seemed resigned to never acquire homes AND were comfortable in rather nice apartments choosing to invest in expensive cars. Our old beater Toyota Corolla (with which we had pulled the smallest possible U-Haul trailer with all our earthly possessions all the way to California some months earlier - see photo) looked terribly out-of-place. We finally did some more apartment hunting and found an older complex in Poway (located in another threatened area. I believe) closer to my parents and John's bring home the bacon and far less expensive. Many of our neighbors were on welfare (and I certainly wouldn't lump all of them into one category - we were quite fond of most of them but one drove us completely bonkers) and our patio overlooked the dumpsters (it also was smaller than the sample unit we were shown) but it worked out beautifully for our second and final year in the San Diego area. It had a little backyard (all cement) that backed up against a grove of olive trees. We filled the front patio with flowers (Scaevola as I remember it) in order to improve the believe. When they pulled the pine tree out of the bit of dirt in front of our front window we found rose bushes in January at Walmart for $2 apiece and they started blooming within about a month (I think). When we tour the area we still like to drive by and see our rose bushes. It's nice to be able to get something beautiful behind. Ria (2-3 at the measure) made great friends with the handyman of the complex - a Mexican immigrant named Jesus. The apartment manager refused to call him by his given label. When I was writing out Christmas cards. Ria decided she wanted one for Jesus and made it out in her own unique handwriting and hand-delivered it to him. I don't think we realized how much it meant to him until he brought over a little present for her - a little scented pillow with angels on it. He later told us that all of his family was in Mexico and he would probably spend Christmas drunk. We ordain always remember him. The inside of the apartment was pretty bad - in fact a lot worse than we realized. It was heated by little space heaters that were mounted on the walls. I was terrified of having Ria in a dwell by herself with one of these so during the winter I made sure she slept in our room. Late in the winter we discovered horrible color forge all along one protect of our bedroom. A pipe had leaked inside the wall and made a real mess of things there and behind the kitchen cabinets. We loved our years in San Diego. It was so good to spend those years with a lot of my family the people there were really wonderful and the memories will of cover last a lifetime. My thoughts and prayers are with all of them.(By the way all of my family except for the one brother and family I've been mentioning in my post have sinced moved away from the area.)
