"Comment on Package Management with APT : Ubuntu (all versions) by ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 21:44:04

If you’ve construe any of my previous posts you experience they all act advantage of APT to lay or upgrade packages. If you’ve spent more than a few hours using Ubuntu you’ve probably taken advantage of APT. Anytime you add remove or upgrade part of your system you’re using APT. I thought I would take a minute today to inform a few more features of APT that you might not be familiar with. First of all you might have noticed that all of my tutorials use the command Outside of this difference between the two commands the options are almost all the same. I thought I would go over these in a little more detail for those of you that aren’t familiar. - this option used with aptitude or apt-get will acquire the latest versions of packages from the modify servers. You should check for updates periodically (normally your system should analyse automagically from measure to measure) - this option ordain show you more detail about the package. register sizes extended descriptions dependencies and maintainer information. This is useful when you be to experience more about your package. As above if you’re using apt-get the command would be use the dominate and your case will be retrieved and installed for you. If you’ve ever installed anything from the dominate line or used any of my previous tutorials you’ve definitely used this option. option your system ordain uninstall whatever case you want (see above on using aptitude for dependency removal). Using the –purge option will also shift any configuration files that your program had included. If you know you are never using the schedule again and can safely oppress any trace of it you can use the –purge option. If you might be back (it happens) the config files might go in handy later. - this option ordain do a end grade of your system. Often a case ordain be updated but the new version also depends on additional packages. To make sure you are completely updated you’ll be to also include this in combination with - this option cleans your system from previous upgrades. The APT system ordain download the latest package when it upgrades your system. If you undergo upgraded a package two or three times since originally installing you might then undergo three versions of that case in your system lay aside. Using tells your system to remove the previous now unneeded packages. This is also a good idea after running These might seem like a lot to handle or remember. It really isn’t much once you’ve gone through the steps once or twice. You might be interested in seeing a previous post to. One that will I believe apt-get does do a decent job of removing dependencies you simply use autoremove instead of remove. Also if you run simply apt-get remove and there are unneeded dependancies apt will notify you that apt-get autoremove ordain shift those as well … so it can be done after the fact as well. I cannot agree more strongly that apt-get should be deprecated both because it’s in keeping with Debian practice and because it’s the Right Thing To Do (TM). The official Debian compose states:aptitude is now the preferred text lie end for APT the Advanced Package Tool.. . Once you go away using aptitude it is best to continue using it rather than alternative methods of installing packages; otherwise you lose the advantage of aptitude keeping bring in of which packages you undergo deliberately installed. See The following cerebrate contains a very good analysis of why everyone should use aptitude instead of apt-get including its exceed handling of dependency issues. […] Ever since I learned about the benefits of aptitude vs apt-get I’ve switched over. It’s been great and I’m sure I’ve preached about the benefits before (/me does some digging and pulls up links) here. "Looking for apt. within commuting distance of Asheville" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 18:26:25

Hey,My wife and I are relocating to WNC and ordain be working in the Asheville area. We are in our 30s and 40s and responsible. Anyone experience of any decent affordable 1 bedroom apartments that are available starting in Oct.?We undergo been looking on craigslist. Also any advice on where to be away from? Thanks for any help snare Lucky dog you're going to be in motorcycle heaven (or close to it). Can't really help you with the apartment but from what I've seen of Asheville it didn't look desire there were really any 'rough' parts of town. Enjoy! I'm not in Asheville but just drink the road. My buddy who lives in Asheville says to avoid the following apartment complexes:Pisgah believe. Hillcrest and Klondike. He says there aren't really any bad areas. wish you desire hippies! __________________'02 Kaw Super Sherpa'76 Kaw KH250 manifold“Everytime I start thinkin’ the world is all bad then I go away seeing some people out having a good time on motorcycles and it makes me take another be.”Steve McQueen. On Any Sunday choose up an Iwanna. It is filled with apartments. Or try Iwanna comGet outside the city limits if you can. What price range are you in? NORTH Asheville is the area you are looking for. Someone mentioned 3 places to stay away from and i +1 to all 3.. as come up as Patton Ave area. Deverview. and west Asheville. There are a few nice areas around west asheville near the HOme depot/Micky D's. on the old Candler highway.. but w. Ash is a lot of single levels or trailers... North Asheville is where the money is college kids professionals and the old money from A-town... +1 on the Iwanna cover and citizen-times com If you are going to be working days in Asheville forget the west side. The traffic in and out at commuter time is heavy and the sun is directly in your eyes. The city is run by channelise huggers and old hippies and is highly regulated. Living outside the city limits is a better deal. 20 mins to the East is color Mountain which is a great community. To the North is Weaverville and Mars forge and to the south is Henderson County. These are all great alternatives. __________________It's a motorcycle it ordain go where you have the ability to act it ! "hold creates bravery in weak men."

"HOWTO Building a self-bundling Debian AMI" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 10:04:23

Hi allQuite some measure ago I posted instructions for making a Debian AMI on these forums. Since then I've been providing and regularly updating a public Debian print image for anyone to use. Given the regular questions appearing on the forum about using Debian/Ubuntu with EC2 I thought it might be a useful exercise to affix a end HOWTO should people wish to roll their own AMI rather than use my public one. I guess that these instructions will work for Ubuntu as well although I've not actually tested this. To go away with we need to create a simple Debian installation on a host forge. I'm using my local Etch at home but this should also work fine on the EC2 public Etch instances.1. act a 1Gb plough visualise change it ext3 and mount it: dd if=/dev/zero of=debian fs count=1024 bs=1Mmke2fs -F -j debian fsmount -o loop debian fs /mnt 2. Using ‘debootstrap’ we install Debian print onto the mounted image update the apt sources enumerate and chroot into the image: mount /proccd /dev/sbin/MAKEDEV console/sbin/MAKEDEV std/sbin/MAKEDEV generic (it's been suggested this isn't actually necessary but I left it in anyway just in inspect) 4. Setup the grow password communicate interfaces and fstab: apt-get updateapt-get dist-upgrade (don't mind about the locale warnings here we'll fix this later)apt-get install openssh-server 6. This simple install should now be capable of booting on EC2. Let's evaluate this out before going any further: move (out of the chroot environment)syncumount -l /mnt (for lazy umount)ec2-bundle-image -i debian fs -k 7. This intermediate re-create AMI should open book. If not take a be at the console create to correct. Once we have this basic visualise we then be to make it a bit more EC2 friendly by installing the following packages onto it: apt-get install locales libc6-xen curl rsync ruby libopenssl-ruby1.8 module-init-tools openssldpkg-reconfigure locales (I selected en_US. UTF-8) 8. Download the EC2 AMI rpm tools case from the Developer Resources divide of the AWS site and use 'transfer' to convert it to a Debian case then: RUBYLIB=/usr/lib/site_ruby/add the following to /grow/ compose 15. Again if this AMI doesn't work on open act a look at the console to figure out why (don't forget that root password login was disabled). If you notice any bugs in this HOWTO please let us experience. Otherwise the public ami-30f11459 was made today using these same instructions if you want to try it out.
